I have been neglecting this blog terribly recently and for that I must apologise. I have decided to keep the blog up (so that you can still look at all the lovely things I've found over the last couple of years) but not to update it anymore. (It has been a month since I last updated, after all. That's not very good!)
I am now a blogger over at Pikaland, so you can still follow my posts there and I also run the "What I Wore Today" blog, where you'll find lots of talented artists' drawings...

marie walgraeve, also known as marmushka, is an illustrator from Ghent in Belgium (I have been discovering a lot of great Belgian artists recently!) She draws lots of girls, as you can see... she says "I wish I was better at drawing boys. If I do draw them, I tend to give them moustaches or beards because it makes them look more masculine. And also, there's something mysterious about men with beards". She is influenced by -among other things- music, My Little Pony and Murakami's books. find her on flick...

i was in the year below this guy at college. i used to fish his discarded drawings out of the bin when he wasn't looking. i'm aware that makes me sound a little like a stalker but... he's a talented chap and his drawings are amazing, so i'm not ashamed. here's his website.
it's actually a little difficult to see the detail in these drawings on a computer screen. see that newspaper? he did the entire thing by hand!

Melanie of colouring outside the lines tagged me in this cyber version of catch/tag/it, so here I go... (excuse my diversion from the usual content- but it feels a little like a chain letter and i'm worried that if i don't pass it on i might die/ the person i fancy will never fancy me back/ i will grow hair all over my feet)

So here are the rules:

So here are my "QUIRKY YET BORING, unspectacular details"...

1. I know pretty much all of the lyrics to Les Miserables (the musical, not the book- THAT would be spectacular!)

2. when i was a child, i was terrified of the red dragon character from the puddle lane books and had recurring nightmares in which he lured me into a dark tool shed and then ate me. i was equally scared of charn, the baddie from the bbc schools programme through the dragon's eye.

3. my friend rachel and i wrote a musical at school about a gang of cats known as the "petits pois" and their great cat leader, juañata. it was animated and everything.

4. i am the only gemma correll in the world. (i think)

5. me and my friend rachel also made a website about a pair of salt and pepper shakers that we sold in debenhams, where we both worked in the home department. they were called "vip" and "bob"- those were the names we gave them anyway.

6. when i was at primary school, i was interviewed by a local church person about "what i want to do when i grow up". i said that i wanted to write an illustrate prayer books "and be a missionary" because i thought it would sound better than just plain old "write and illustrate books".

So, there are my six things.

australian artiste emma magenta doesn't appear to have a website, but i would like to tell y'all about her work all the same because i think she's super. a friend bought me her book "the peril of magnificent love" a few years ago, at a time when the story spoke to me in a deep kind of level.... and i still love it, the writing and drawing are so simple yet compelling. she has also designed tee towels for third drawer down.

this post isn't about a specific illustrator- rather 2 groups of london-based artists: uno: Le Gun and due: the illustrators that took part in Mystery Spot. I went to see both of these exhibitions today and they were super inspiring. I encourage you to check 'em out if you can.My particular favourites were the work of Emma Rendel at Le Gun and Cornelia O'Donovan at Mystery Spot. Aces.

i went to the norwich art school (actually, i think it's now called "the norwich university of the arts" or something) degree show private view last night. it was the usual hot, overcrowded affair with a lot of mediocre work. my friends and i were unanimous in our choice of the pick of the show. as usual it was an illustrator (although i may be biased as an ex-nsad illustration student myself)... dave prosser, who also makes superfantastisch animations.

i first saw satrapi's work a couple of years ago in a book called "pictures and words", about comic book and narrative illustration. then, over a year later, i went to america and discovered a copy of "persepolis" in barnes and noble. i devoured the whole book in one evening.
since then, i've been a huge fan and i've bought all of her other graphic novels (persepolis 2, embroideries...) and i'm very excited that the animated version of persepolis comes out here in about a month- i have seen it once already, on dvd, in french, but it will be ace to see it on the big screen.
